Vaison-la-Romaine: an open-air museum

Ancient sites: exceptional Gallo-Roman remains
The ancient site of Puymin
For lovers of history and discovery, Vaison-la-Romaine will delight you with its ancient sites. In the Puymin district, you can admire the remains of two vast houses called Domus, where you’ll find all the amenities we know.
A fully-equipped kitchen, baths and latrines can all be discovered in this place steeped in history.
You’ll also find a museum where numerous statues, mosaics and everyday objects await to complete your visit.
ANCIENT HISTORY
The ancient site of Villasse
The Villasse district, meanwhile, is the central thoroughfare of the Roman town, with its stores, forum and thermal baths. You’ll also find the remains of another house inhabited by wealthy Romans. Numerous statues and mosaics are also present.
These two sites bear witness to the past grandeur of our ancient city known as Vasio Vocontiorum, much of which is still buried beneath our feet.
New discoveries are made every year, so grab your shovels 😉
LIVING CULTURE
The antique theater: the contemporary cradle of summer entertainment
The ancient theater of Vaison-la-Romaine is the pride of our city. It lies to the north of the Puymin district. Dating from 1ᵉʳ century A.D., it was and still is a must-see venue. Concerts, plays and many other cultural events take place here throughout the season.
The proximity of the stage and the unique setting of this majestic venue create an unforgettable atmosphere at all events.
The Roman bridge, a real link with the medieval part of Vaison-la-Romaine
Just 1 km from the Théâtre campsite in Vaucluse (Accueil), you can cross the Ouvèze river on our famous Roman bridge, which has stood the test of time since Antiquity, to reach the medieval part of Vaison-la-Romaine. It’s a real change of era. With its ramparts, narrow streets and castle, built by the Counts of Toulouse, as well as the listed cathedral church of Sainte Marie de l’Assomption, you’ll be transported back in time. You’ll also find many art galleries.
This part of Vaison is also known as the “Haute Ville”, and is a must-see place for strolling, with beautiful views over the Vaison countryside and Mont Ventoux, a mecca for sports and, in particular, cycle touring.
